The FMS 2 is a lightweight, field portable fluorescence instrument
which uses the pulse-modulated principle to monitor chlorophyll
fluorescence. It is therefore suitable for non-intrusive sampling
from tissue operating under natural light or working in conjunction
with other techniques such as infra-red gas analysis (IRGA).
At the heart of the system is the field-rugged FMS2 control unit;
this is a (18x10x10 cm) housing which is light enough (2.0 Kg)
to be carried and operated from its shoulder bag. It contains the
integral light sources and temperature compensated electronics
needed for fluorescence measurement. The light sources include:
- 594 nm amber modulating beam
- Optional 470 nm blue LED
- Dual-purpose halogen actinic- 0 to 3,000 µmolm-2s-1 in 50
steps.
- Saturating pulse lamp --0 to 20,000 µmolm-2s-1 in 100
steps.
- 735 nm far-red LED source for preferential PSI
excitation.
A detachable fibre-optic is used to optically link the control
unit to the sample which is typically supported in a leafclip. The
FMS 2 is supplied with two leafclip systems.
The PAR and Temperature leafclip has an integral cosine corrected
PAR sensor and leaf thermocouple. Simultaneous logging of
fluorescence, incident PAR and leaf temperature can be initiated
from the remote trigger button. A dark-adaptation clip system is also
supplied.
